Ink Different: How to Add Signatures to Documents in iOS 9

Back in the old days, when you were agreeing to a contract or signing off on a letter, you took out your pen and wrote out your signature in the appropriate spot. Nowadays, it’s become acceptable to “sign” digital documents — usually PDFs — by inserting a digital version of your John Hancock.
Unfortunately, if you wanted to do so on your iPhone or iPad, you’ve always needed a third-party app. But now, with the release of iOS 9, signature tools come built into the operating system. Here’s how to use them:

    The digital dotted line

To get started, you’ll need to add an attachment to a mail message. But not just any attachment: Only certain types of files — including PDFs and images — are compatible with Mail’s new signature tool.
Once the attachment (or its icon, in the case of PDFs) appears in the body of the Mail message, tap the space after the attachment to bring up a pop-up menu. On that menu, tap Markup.
That will open a new window showing just the attachment. A toolbar at the bottom offers a bunch of different annotation tools, including drawing, text, a magnification loupe, and — fourth from the left — a digital signature.

Tapping that icon brings up the digital signature popover, which displays any existing signatures you might have saved previously, as well as an Add or Remove Signature button.
To add a new signature, tap Add or Remove Signature, then tap the New (+) button in the top right corner of the sheet that appears. (You can also remove signatures from this screen by tapping the red Delete (-) button to their left and then tapping Delete.)

On the following screen, sign on the line using your finger or a stylus. If you make a mistake and want to start over, tap the Clear button in the top right and start again. When you’re finished, tap Done. The signature you just created will be automatically inserted into the attachment, and it will also now be available from the signature pop-up menu.
Tap and drag the signature to wherever you want it in the attachment; you can resize it as necessary by using the blue handles on its corners or delete it altogether by tapping it and choosing Delete.

When you’re satisfied, tap the Done button in the top right of the sheet and you’ll return to the mail message. But be aware that once you’ve done that, you’ll no longer be able to edit the signature: it’s become part of the document. You can, however, start over by deleting the attachment and re-adding it.
